If you enjoy exploring new landscapes by mountain bike, you will love the Canary Islands. Hardly any place in Europe offers so much variety in such a small area. And the best part: the Canaries are a true year-round destination. Even in winter, you can easily explore the islands by bike – usually with temperatures ranging between 18 and 27 degrees.

Why the Canary Islands are perfect for Mountain Bikers

Mountain biking in the Canaries means freedom. The climate is mild, the trails are diverse, and the islands offer a wide variety of terrain – from gentle gravel paths to demanding enduro lines. The volcanic origin shapes many trails: black lava fields, loose pumice soil, and bizarre rock formations create unique riding conditions.

At the same time, several islands feature dense pine or laurel forests where trails can be rooty and moist. And the higher you go, the greater the temperature differences become. It’s precisely this variety that makes the Canary Islands one of the most exciting MTB destinations in Europe.

MTB Highlights of the individual Canary Islands

Tenerife – Volcanic power and endless elevation gain

Tenerife is the largest and at the same time the most diverse island. Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, rises over 3.700 meters into the sky. Around it, you’ll find endless kilometers of forest roads, single tracks, and gravel paths. Particularly fascinating is the contrast between the dry south and the greener, more humid north.

If you enjoy long tours with plenty of elevation gain, you will love the national park surrounding Mount Teide. Here, you’ll ride through almost extraterrestrial lava fields that shimmer in various shades of red. Further north, you'll dive into the Anaga Mountains – one of the oldest regions of the island. The misty laurel forest creates a mystical atmosphere and technical trails that become especially challenging after rain.

On Tenerife, make sure to bring enough water. Especially at higher altitudes, the air is drier than you might expect. Additionally, wind and clouds can change quickly, so a light windbreaker should be part of your basic equipment.

Gran Canaria – The miniature continent for all-Mountain and Enduro fans

Gran Canaria is often referred to as a “miniature continent” – and for good reason. Within just 50 kilometers in diameter, the island combines coastal deserts, forests, deep ravines, and high peaks. Its center around Pico de las Nieves is a dream for mountain bikers who love long descents. From up there, you can roll down more than 2.000 meters of elevation all the way to the coast, while the landscape seems to change every few minutes.

The trails around Teror and Valleseco are especially popular, offering green valleys, narrow singletracks, and technical sections. The south of the island, on the other hand, is drier and more open. Around Maspalomas, you’ll find wide, sandy areas that almost resemble Morocco.

Gran Canaria also scores with excellent infrastructure for bikers. Many rental shops offer high-quality bikes, shuttle services take you to the starting point of your tour, and the selection of guided routes is large. If you prefer a more organized experience or have different skill levels within your group, this island is especially comfortable.

Lanzarote – Between lava fields and lunar landscapes

Lanzarote is the island that stands out the most in terms of landscape. Here, black lava fields, red craters, and wind-swept plains dominate the scenery. As a mountain biker, you need to expect hard, rocky terrain. In return, you ride through a setting you probably won’t experience anywhere else.

The area around Timanfaya National Park is particularly impressive. The volcanoes look as if the earth had spewed fire only yesterday. Between the lava fields, you’ll find narrow trails that repeatedly lead you to viewpoints. Things get a bit more relaxed around La Geria, the island’s famous wine-growing region. There, soft lava stone depressions alternate with wider paths.

In the north of the island lies Famara – a coastal section that excites not only surfers but also bikers. Here, you can ride along the Risco de Famara and enjoy sweeping views over the Atlantic. However, the constant wind is something you’ll need to get used to. A light, agile hardtail is recommended for Lanzarote, though a full-suspension bike is also helpful for some of the rockier sections.

Fuerteventura – Vast landscapes and endless tracks

At times, Fuerteventura feels like riding through a mix of Namibia and Mexico. The island is barren, expansive, and incredibly calm. It’s less known for technically demanding trails. Instead, it is a paradise for touring riders, gravel bikers, and anyone who enjoys long, flowing routes without major obstacles.

The north around Corralejo offers beautiful coastal paths winding between sand dunes and rocks. A particularly charming route leads to El Cotillo, a small fishing village with stunning beaches. Things get slightly more challenging at Calderón Hondo, a perfectly shaped volcano you can circle or even climb.

The farther south you go, the more solitary the routes become. Jandía National Park is a vast area of rock, sand, and mountains. Here, you should absolutely carry enough water and keep your bike well maintained – the combination of wind, sand, and stones is tough on both equipment and chain.

La Palma – the “Isla Bonita” and an eldorado for enduro fans

La Palma is considered the insider tip among many mountain bikers. The island is extremely mountainous, incredibly green, and offers some of the longest and most varied descents in the Canary Islands. A special highlight is the region around the Roque de los Muchachos. From there, you can descend the island almost all the way to sea level in several stages.

The trails constantly change in character. At the top, the ground is dry and gravelly, further down you ride through dense pine forests, later through laurel forest, and finally through subtropical vegetation. One of the best-known routes is the “Reventón,” a classic singletrack that is both flowy and technical.

However, La Palma is demanding. The steep descents require concentration and good equipment. A sturdy enduro bike is essential here. Those who embrace the challenge will be rewarded with an MTB experience unlike any other.

La Gomera – Pure nature and wild trails

La Gomera is the island for you if you enjoy venturing away from the crowds. The landscape is dramatic: deep ravines, rugged rock faces, and green plateaus define the scenery. Particularly impressive is Garajonay National Park with its mystical laurel forest. The trails there are natural, sometimes damp, and occasionally technically challenging.

One of the most beautiful descents leads down into the Valle Gran Rey. On the way, you cross several climate zones before arriving in the warm valley, where you can park your bike almost directly by the sea. La Gomera is not for beginners, but it’s ideal for adventurous riders who appreciate untouched nature.

El Hierro – Insider tip for trail enthusiasts

El Hierro is the smallest of the seven main islands and also the quietest. There is no mass tourism here, but instead lonely trails, volcanic rock formations, and welcoming village communities. Particularly exciting is the Camino de Jinama, an old shepherd’s path that is very steep and demanding.

You’ll find many modern MTB routes in the Golfo Valley and around Frontera. There, open flow sections alternate with technical passages, often accompanied by fantastic views of the cliffs and the deep blue Atlantic.

El Hierro is perfect if you want to ride far away from the hustle and bustle and are looking for an original, authentic island experience.

La Graciosa – Small island, big freedom

La Graciosa is officially the eighth Canary Island, even though it is geographically small and very quiet in terms of tourism. Cars are barely allowed, and the paths consist mostly of sand and gravel. Perfect for relaxed tours without major challenges.

A lap around the island or a ride to the famous Montaña Amarilla is always worthwhile. The view of Lanzarote and the intense colors of the beaches make La Graciosa a very special place – ideal for a relaxed bike tour in between.

What you should keep in mind for your MTB adventure on the Canary Islands

There are a few things you should keep in mind on all islands. The sun is more intense than in Central Europe, so sunscreen, sunglasses, and enough water belong in every pack. Many trails are remote, so a small repair kit is recommended. On higher-altitude routes – such as on Tenerife and La Palma – the weather can change quickly, making a wind jacket essential.

Depending on the island, the terrain can also wear down your equipment more quickly. Lava and dust put a strain on the chain, so a quick daily cleaning is advisable.

Conclusion – Which island suits you best?

If you’re looking for challenging trails and lots of elevation gain, La Palma and Tenerife are your best choice. For diverse landscapes and well-developed bike infrastructure, Gran Canaria is an excellent option. Lanzarote fascinates with its lunar landscapes, while Fuerteventura is ideal for touring riders. La Gomera and El Hierro offer natural authenticity and tranquility, and La Graciosa is perfect for relaxed, stress-free biking days.

The Canary Islands are a paradise for mountain bikers – you just have to choose the island that best matches your style!
