Parking rules in Spain, Mallorca & the Canary Islands: These colors you should know when parking

Are you planning a holiday in Spain and want to know where you can park your car during your trip without risking a fine?

If you're driving a rental car in Spain, Mallorca, or the Canary Islands, it's important to understand the street parking markings. The colored lines indicate where and how long you can park – and help you avoid expensive fines or even towing. Here's an overview:

White lines

Parking spaces marked with white lines usually mean: free parking. But caution: additional signs may specify time restrictions – e.g., no parking on market days.

Yellow lines

Solid yellow line: absolute no parking. Parking here can result in a fine of up to 200 euros.

Yellow zigzag line: area reserved for specific vehicles, such as buses, taxis, fire department, or for loading zones.

Blue lines (Zona Azul)

Blue-marked parking zones are pay zones. A parking ticket is required and must be visibly displayed in the vehicle. In many cities, parking is free during certain hours – such as at night, on public holidays, or during siesta. Details are available at parking meters.

Orange lines

These zones are usually reserved for residents, electric vehicles, or car-sharing vehicles. In some municipalities, visitors are also allowed to park for a fee at specific times. Exact rules are indicated on signs at the location. In some places, these areas are marked red instead of orange.

Green lines

Green-marked parking spaces are primarily free for residents. Visitors may generally park there short-term and for a fee. In some regions, green lines are also used for short-term use by taxis or delivery vehicles.

Other parking guidelines

Parking on sidewalks, against the direction of traffic, or in front of fire access routes is prohibited. Public parking garages are often the safer choice – prices vary greatly depending on location.

Fines and Towing

Inspections are especially strict in city centers and tourist coastal areas.

Violations may result in:

Fines between 80 and 200 euros

Towing costs: 100–150 euros plus storage fees

If paid within 20 days, there is usually a 50% discount

What you should consider when booking a rental car

Before booking your rental car, it’s worth carefully reviewing the contract details. Especially on the Canary and Balearic Islands, there are differences in insurance, fuel policies, and mileage limits. Here are a few tips to avoid unpleasant surprises:

Fully comprehensive insurance with no deductible: Recommended to be covered in case of damage – especially on narrow mountain roads or tightly parked old town streets.

Fair fuel policy: The "full/full" policy is the most transparent – you receive the car with a full tank and return it full.

Unlimited mileage: Particularly important if you want to explore the island thoroughly.

Add a second driver: If you plan to share the driving, make sure a second driver can be registered for free or at a low cost.

Pick-up & return: Many providers offer pick-up directly at the airport – check opening hours and possible charges outside regular hours.

Tip: Check the parking options at your accommodation in advance – especially in summer, having your own parking space can save a lot of time and stress.
