Have you heard of the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves? This traditional pilgrimage festival on the Canary Island of La Palma captivates visitors from around the world. From June 29 to July 14, 2025, you can experience this spectacular event, which takes place only once every five years. After the pandemic-induced hiatus in 2020, the Bajada is returning in full splendor - a celebration you won’t want to miss!
What awaits you at the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves?
The Bajada is much more than a religious evento - it’s a cultural highlight that combines history, music, dance, and folklore. In honor of La Palma’s patron saint, the Virgen de las Nieves, the statue is ceremoniously brought down from her sanctuary in the mountains to the Church of El Salvador in the heart of Santa Cruz.
The moving legend of the Virgen de las Nieves
Did you know that the legend of the Virgen de las Nieves dates back to 352 AD? According to the story, Pope Liberius had a vision of a Marian figure instructing him to build a church where snow would fall the next morning—in the summer heat of Rome! This miraculous tale spread across the Christian world, and in 1534, the Virgen was declared the patron saint of La Palma.
Since 1680, the Bajada has been celebrated regularly. Originally, the townspeople sought the Madonna’s help during natural disasters by bringing her statue into the city. Over time, colorful customs and dances evolved, which remain an integral part of the festivities today.
Semana Chica and Semana Grande – Two weeks of highlights
The Bajada’s program is divided into two parts: the Semana Chica (the small week) and the Semana Grande (the big week).
Semana Chica
This week begins with the solemn blessing of the Madonna’s flag at the Church of El Salvador. Highlights include the procession to transfer the saint’s throne and the famous Danza Infantil Coreada, where children delight with singing and dancing. Another standout event is the Danza de Mascarones, featuring figures with giant heads and extravagant costumes parading through the city.
Semana Grande
The Semana Grande kicks off with the Pandorga, a vibrant parade of artistic lanterns, culminating in a spectacular bonfire. The next day features a traditional acrobatics show, followed by the Minuet, which brings historical Rococo dances to life. The absolute highlight, however, is the Dance of the Dwarfs—an unforgettable mix of singing, dancing, and astonishing transformations.
The festive finale
On July 11, the Virgin’s statue reaches Santa Cruz in an elaborately decorated carriage, accompanied by a Baroque play. The grand finale is the Entrada Triunfal de la Virgen, where the statue is brought into the Church of El Salvador amidst cannon fire and cheers. A romantic choral piece, the Loa de Recibimiento, beautifully concludes the celebration.
