What is the Transvulcania?

Transvulcania is an ultramarathon held on the island of La Palma, taking place annually since 2009. It is considered one of the most challenging yet scenic trail running competitions in Europe. The course runs along the island’s ridge – through volcanic mountain ranges, past pine forests, and along spectacular high-altitude trails with views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The main event is the ultramarathon, covering around 74 kilometers and more than 4.000 meters of elevation gain – both uphill and downhill. However, there are also shorter races for beginners and advanced runners.

When does Transvulcania 2026 take place?

Transvulcania 2026 will take place from May 7 to May 9, 2026. Due to limited participant numbers in each discipline, we recommend registering early to secure your spot. Registration is only available online via the official website of the organizer.

Disciplines and course overview – Transvulcania 2026

Transvulcania offers various race formats for runners of different experience levels:

Transvulcania Ultramarathon

The Transvulcania Ultramarathon is one of the most spectacular and toughest trail running races in the world. The main route covers a total of 73,06 kilometers, with 4.350 meters of ascent and 4.057 meters of descent – a true challenge even for experienced runners.

The course starts at sea level at the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse in the south of the island, initially following the well-known long-distance trail GR 131, also known as the Ruta del Bastón. This route crosses the island’s impressive volcanic massif and leads participants through spectacular landscapes of lava fields, pine forests, and vast panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean. A definite highlight of the route is the Roque de los Muchachos, at 2.421 meters, the highest point on La Palma. From there, a technically demanding downhill section leads to Puerto de Tazacorte – a grueling descent of nearly 2.000 meters.

The final part of the course continues along the GR 130 (Camino Real de la Costa) to the finish line at the Plaza de España in Los Llanos de Aridane. Here, runners can expect an emotional finish amid enthusiastic spectators – the unique atmosphere in Los Llanos has been a hallmark of Transvulcania for years.

Distance: 73,06 km

Elevation gain/loss: +4.350 m / -4.057 m

Maximum time: 16 hours

Start: 6:00 am in Fuencaliente (Lighthouse)

Finish: Los Llanos de Aridane

Difficulty: High

Transvulcania 2026 Ultramarathon

Transvulcania Marathon

The Transvulcania Marathon is one of the most challenging disciplines of the trail running event on La Palma. The course starts in the recreational area Refugio de El Pilar in the municipality of El Paso, at an altitude of 1.450 meters above sea level. From there, the course follows the famous GR 131 – Ruta del Bastón down to the coast, finishing near the beach in Puerto de Tazacorte, at sea level.

The total distance is 43,20 kilometers, with 1.884 meters of ascent and 3.329 meters of descent. The final part of the route is particularly demanding: from Roque de los Muchachos, the island’s highest point at 2.426 meters, runners descend via steep, technical trails all the way down to the beach at Puerto de Tazacorte. This massive elevation difference is physically and technically demanding. Specific preparation for long downhill sections, joint stress, and altitude acclimatization is highly recommended.

Distance: 43,2 km

Elevation gain/loss: +1.884 m / -3.329 m

Maximum time: 10 hours

Start: 6:00 am Refugio de El Pilar

Finish: Tazacorte

Difficulty: Medium to high

Conclusion: This route is ideal for experienced trail runners who are looking for a shorter but still technically demanding alternative to the ultramarathon. The breathtaking views along the volcanic route and the epic finish at the Atlantic beach make the Transvulcania Marathon an unforgettable experience.

Transvulcania 2026 Marathon

Transvulcania Media Marathon (Half Marathon)

While shorter than the Ultramarathon, the Transvulcania Half Marathon is a true challenge for trail runners due to its demanding terrain. The course spans 24,80 kilometers, with a cumulative ascent of 2.097 meters and a descent of 869 meters – definitely not a leisurely run.

The race begins at the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse, approximately 90 minutes after the start of the Ultramarathon. From there, the route follows the impressive Ruta de los Volcanes, but in the opposite direction to the Ultramarathon. This means runners must make their way through the “Malpaís” – a rugged volcanic landscape of sharp lava rock – uphill to Refugio de El Pilar in El Paso. Despite (or perhaps because of) the shorter distance, the Half Marathon offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the entire Transvulcania series.

Along the way, participants pass landmarks such as Las Deseadas, a popular viewpoint from which, on clear days, much of the island and even neighboring islands can be seen. Another highlight is the emotional support along the route: especially in the early morning hours, the residents of Fuencaliente gather to cheer on the runners with music, applause, and encouraging shouts – an experience many participants never forget.

Distance: 24,8 km

Elevation gain/loss: +2.097 m / -869 m

Maximum time: 6,5 hours

Start: 7:30 am in Fuencaliente (Lighthouse)

Finish: Refugio de El Pilar

Difficulty: Medium

Conclusion: The Transvulcania Half Marathon on La Palma is ideal for experienced runners looking to explore alpine trail running – or for those seeking a shorter yet intense adventure in the volcanic heart of the Canary Island.

Transvulcania 2026 Media Marathon

Transvulcania Kilómetro Vertical (Vertical Challenge)

The Transvulcania Vertical Kilometer is one of the most intense yet shortest disciplines of the event. With just 7,26 kilometers in length but a 1.203-meter elevation gain, this race is aimed at experienced trail runners focused on uphill performance and technical climbing.

The race starts right at the beach of Puerto de Tazacorte, at sea level (0 m). From there, the route follows the famous GR-131, but in the opposite direction to the Ultramarathon course – ascending through the steep cliffside of El Time toward the municipality of Tijarafe. The first notable checkpoint is the old Almacén de Plátanos at 273 m, offering a spectacular view over Tazacorte and the coastline. The course then continues along a mix of hiking trail and road up to the Restaurant Mirador El Time at 513 m, a popular viewpoint with panoramic views over the Aridane Valley.

From there, the trail continues along the GR-131 up to Casa Húngara (624 m), a well-known landmark. Runners then leave the main trail and follow a local path through the municipality of Tijarafe. Broadcast antennas at 722 m and the iconic Mirador de Piedra del Guanche (750 m) mark key points along the way. In the final section, the route rejoins the GR-131 before finishing at the forest tower of El Time at an altitude of 1.600 meters. The entire climb rewards participants with breathtaking views of the northwestern side of La Palma, the Aridane Valley, and the rugged coastline around Tazacorte.

Distance: 7,26 km

Elevation gain: +1.203 m

Maximum time: 3 hours

Start: 5:00 pm in Puerto de Tazacorte

Finish: Torre de El Time

Difficulty: Medium

Conclusion: This discipline is perfect for runners who specialize in the vertical kilometer format or those who want to tackle a compact yet extremely demanding course. In addition to the physical challenge, participants are treated to a unique backdrop of volcanic valleys, Atlantic views, and steep cliffs – all signature features of trail running on La Palma.

Tips for Transvulcania 2026 participants

Preparation is everything: Train in advance for the elevation gain – many runners underestimate the climbs. Also, plan some test runs in similar terrain.

Acclimatize to the climate: In May, it can be cool in the mountains and quite warm along the coast. Pack both short and long running gear.

Shoe choice: Sturdy trail running shoes with good grip are a must. The ground is often rocky, slippery, and uneven.

Nutrition: While there are aid stations, many runners carry their own gels, bars, or electrolytes.

Our recommendation: Plan and book early

Demand during the Transvulcania weekend is traditionally very high. Many accommodations are booked out months in advance, and when it comes to securing a race slot – every minute counts. Smart runners plan early – not only to secure one of the coveted race entries but also to lock in the right accommodation and a rental car stress-free.

That way, you can fully focus on your trail running adventure on La Palma – well-organized and filled with anticipation rather than pressure.
